Video: Here’s What The Girls Extras Do Behind The Scenes On-Set

Next week’s Girls episode “Welcome to Bushwick a.k.a. The Crackcident” is pretty self-explanatory: The boroughs converge on a party in Brooklyn, and Shoshanna accidentally smokes crack. We’ve glimpsed the massive party in the preview, but one of the extras has now given us a fun behind-the-scenes peek at the making of HBO‘s New York-centric show.

Olive Hui posted a video of her and the other party-scene extras singing Cee-Lo Green‘s “Fuck You” in the early hours of the morning after they wrapped the shoot. Note that it’s in the holding area and not the actual set, because that would be breaking the rules for what you can videotape and post to YouTube. She told Brokelyn that the impromptu singalong came out of utter exhaustion:

“Overnight shoots are fun but inevitably rough. People were delirious. A small singing circle started in the middle of the holding area where we keep all our belongings towards the end of the night. A guitar & drumsticks were all we had. Cee-Lo Green’s ‘F*&# You’ happened to be the last song of the night before we were wrapped.”

Despite the long shoot, the extras seem to be having a great time. This is the kind of camaraderie that makes me wish I could act, or at least that I knew how to do things like go be an extra on Girls. And as Brokelyn points out, at least there’s some diversity among this group, even if they are literally in the background. Nonspeaking nonwhite parts are a step up, maybe?
