Eric Stonestreet Wants You To Ignore The Protests And Watch His Show, How Charming

By  |

Eric Stonestreet in Modern Family GIFI was pretty sure you'd have to be living under a rock to be unaware of the protests going on across the country right now, but apparently Eric Stonestreet likes his audience apathetic, because he tweeted to his fans to just turn off that pesky news and watch Modern Family instead. Charming.

Now, I understand that I'm more inclined to know and care about this purely based on proximity (I live in New York City), but it's something we should all be talking about, so let me catch you up. Remember that guy Eric Garner? He was an unarmed, asthmatic black man who was choked to death by a white police officer on Staten Island this past July. The attack was filmed, and if you watch the video, you can hear that his last words were ‘I can't breathe', a phrase repeated until his death at the hands of a man whom yesterday, a jury failed to indict.

It made a lot of people very angry, and justifiably so, which is why Eric's tweet telling people to turn off the news and turn on his show really rubbed me the wrong way:

I don't know man, if you really want to ignore the news, why not make that your own irresponsible decision instead of putting it on other people? Just because you want to turn your back and close your eyes to this problem doesn't mean anyone else does, or should.

And hey, why bring the news into your tweet at all? Especially because now that Modern Family is in syndication it's always on too, just like the terrible news. The difference is that one of those things can only improve if we watch it and talk about it and stay informed, and the other one is just gonna keep raking in Emmys regardless, so why bother?
