The First Ender’s Game Photo Shows That They Definitely Eat Lunch At Some Point

Enders GameWe are smack-dab in the middle of a major science fiction and fantasy revolution boom, ya'll, and the newest nugget of media to capitalize on that trend is Ender's Game, a film based on the book of the same name by Orson Scott Card. It's not due to come out until November 1st, 2013, but the first still was recently released, so let's talk about it.

This is one of those books that I always meant to get around to reading when I was younger, but never quite made it happen for myself, so before I go edumucate myself on the interwebs about it, let me analyze this photo with an outsider's perspective. I would say ‘untrained eye', but after years of suffering through reality television, my eyes have been through a lot by now, and they're extremely trained. So this picture. They're…eating lunch. That's probably enough, right? No? Well that's all I can really tell at a first glance, so meet me down at the next paragraph after I've had some time to acquaint myself with this storyline.

OKAY. The guy is Asa Butterfield and the girl is Hailey Steinfeld. Asa plays the title role of Ender and Hailey plays his best friend, Petra. The two of them live in a world where the Earth has twice been attacked by an alien race, the Formics, and have had to create a training ground called Battle School to train the youth to withstand future attacks. Ender shows particular aptitude for it and is quickly identified as the planet's best hope and moved from Battle School to Command School to continue studying ‘war games'. Once there, he continues his training in hopes of becoming¬†America's Next Top Model saving the human race from certain annihilation.

The movie combines two books in the series — Enders Game and Ender's Shadow, fusing the most important parts of each although very few of the film's scenes actually appear in the book, according to Orson Scott Card. The film is being directed by Gavin Hood and also stars Abigail Breslin, Harrison Ford, Viola Davis, and Ben Kingsley, as well as some really delicious-looking Rice Krispy treats.
