If you happen to currently be in a book club, tell your group you have to quit. You'll only be in book clubs with Emma Watson from now on. The Harry Potter actress and Goodwill Ambassador for UN Women just started her own feminist book club and anyone can join. Emma first shared the news with a tweet saying “I want to start a feminist book club but so far have only brainstormed ‘Feminist Book Club' and ‘Emma Watson Book Club'”. She asked for name suggestions from her over 20 million followers with celebs like Sophia Bush and Abby Wambach joining in. After some deliberations, Emma chose the fan-submitted name of ‘Our Shared Shelf' and the coolest book club ever came into existence.

The digital book club, Emma announced, will be held every month on Goodreads. Anyone with a user account can join in on the discussion and suggest books for the upcoming months. Emma started things off with this note:

Dear Readers,

As part of my work with UN Women, I have started reading as many books and essays about equality as I can get my hands on. There is so much amazing stuff out there! Funny, inspiring, sad, thought-provoking, empowering! I’ve been discovering so much that, at times, I’ve felt like my head was about to explode… I decided to start a Feminist book club, as I want to share what I’m learning and hear your thoughts too.

The plan is to select and read a book every month, then discuss the work during the month’s last week (to give everyone time to read it!). I will post some questions/quotes to get things started, but I would love for this to grow into an open discussion with and between you all. Whenever possible I hope to have the author, or another prominent voice on the subject, join the conversation.

If you fancy it, please join up and participate. Everyone is welcome. I would be honoured!

The first book is My Life on the Road by legendary feminist activist Gloria Steinhem, who gave the club her own seal of approval.

So get to reading people! And no one try to be clever by suggesting Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire every month and ruin this for us.
