Emma Watson Might Be Playing Cinderella, Apparently Disney Really Does Make Dreams Come True

Emma Watson NYU

My love affair with Cinderella goes back more than two decades.  (Yes, I battle with my inner feminist about this all the time, but I can’t bring myself to shake my fist at 1950s Disney too hard.)  My love affair with Emma Watson spans at least one decade.  My love affair with Drew Barrymore as Cinderella in Ever After spanned my entire junior year of high school when we based our entire prom theme off of that movie.  After I walked out of a papier-mâché pumpkin in my high school auditorium, that love affair ended.  Which is why I am ridiculously excited and delighted at the thought of Emma Watson playing Cinderella in a new live-action, modern film.

Oh wait, what’s that? Cate Blanchett is being cast as Emma’s evil stepmother?  Holy shit you guys, this film just got realer than real.   I’d love to see a more modern fairytale, if there is such a thing.  Then again, I can’t imagine Disney making a misogynistic live-action version in 2013.  Here’s hoping, anyway!

There will be inevitable comparisons between Emma Watson’s Cinderella and Kristen Stewart’s Snow White, I’m sure.  These comparisons can be summed up in one sentence: One is watchable and likeable and one is not.  I don’t see Emma Watson getting bizzay with director Kenneth Branagh, though, so Disney’s publicity department probably has a little more work cut out for them while promoting the DVD release of this film in the future.

Either way, Emma Watson is darling and lovely and one of my favorite best friends that live inside my head.  The thought of this movie excites me in ways it probably shouldn’t, considering I’m 27 years old and I definitely don’t have any children.

In the meantime, we can all look forward to Disney’s Maleficent, and Angelina Jolie Jolie-ing up a storm.  (Just kidding, I’m way more excited about Vivienne Jolie-Pitt Jolie-Pitting up a storm in her cameo.)
