Emma Stone Is in Talks to Play Cruella de Vil in an Origin Story, So I’m Forced to Approve
Disney's new favorite thing is making live-action versions of their most beloved animated classics. We've already had Maleficent and Cinderella, and we'll soon get Beauty and the Beast. I tend to respond to these movie announcements with an eye roll, because really, Disney? You have so few original ideas that you just have to remake your own movies?
Except I'm admittedly a bit of a hypocrite about it, because as soon as someone I like is cast, I get excited. I was delighted by the news that Emma Watson would be playing Belle, and finding out that Josh Gad had actually been cast as LeFou after I suggested he would be the perfect choice made me more than a little cocky. Earlier today I read that Emma Stone is in talks to play 101 Dalmations villain Cruella de Vil in an origin story that's in the works, and suddenly I'm all, “Curse you, Disney, you brilliant douchebags! Now I want to watch it!”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Emma “is in early negotiations” to star in Cruella, which is being written by Kelly Marcel (of “soft and hard at the same time” fame) and which the studio hopes to start shooting later this year. Well, I will say at least it's not a direct remake of 101 Dalmations, since we already had that, plus a sequel, starring Glenn Close. I will also say that I love Emma Stone, and that I think she may very well totally kill it in this part. Both literally and figuratively, depending on how early Cruella became her cruel self.
I am wondering how Disney is going to approach this story, though. Are they going to try to make her sympathetic? Because I don't know, wanting to steal a bunch of puppies and kill them to make a coat is pretty hard to swallow no matter how hard one's life has been. But maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. At the very least, I hope Emma gets to hold that cigarette holder at least once. And laugh like a madwoman. And say “daaahling.” OH GOD GIVE IT TO ME NOW!
