Emily Blunt Joins Into The Woods Cast, Here’s Why You Should Care

Emily Blunt attending Critic's Circle Awards January 2013Emily Blunt is currently in talks to join the cast of Into The Woods, and if you weren't a theater idiot in college like I was, there's a chance that news isn't exciting, so let me help you out with that. Into The Woods is a musical by Stephen Sondheim with a big cast of familiar characters from fairy tales like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Jack and the Beanstalk. It has dark themes, but the first half is bright and fun, with the main characters the Baker and the Baker's Wife bargaining with the Witch to break the curse on their family and let them have a child.

In order to do so, they need to collect five items: the cow as white as milk, the cape as red as blood, the hair as yellow as corn, and the slipper as pure as gold. As they search for these items, they encounter their owners and sing lovely, atonal songs about their life's struggles. In the second half, however, things get reeeeeeal dark, with elements like murder and adultery, which I'm not sure how they're going to handle in this particular production, because it's a complete change of pace that I've only seen work onstage because of the intermission that comes between the two acts.

There's no word yet on whom Emily will play, and even though a significant portion of the cast is known, the only characters that have been officially assigned (or in some cases only rumored) are Meryl Streep as The Witch, Johnny Depp as The Wolf, and a wonderful British actor named James Corden as The Baker. Others known to be in the cast are Chris Pine, Christine Baranski (from The Good Wife), and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Until production starts,¬†Emily will be keeping busy filming her current project with Tom Cruise which is — I shit you not — entitled All You Need Is Kill. Oh we gettin' real lazy now.
