I don't obsessively follow the news surrounding Quentin Tarantino‘s upcoming projects, so it came as a surprise when the first trailer for his new film Django Unchained appeared online earlier today. But wow, it looks great! I'm jokingly calling it a buddy comedy, but I imagine Tarantino means it to be so much more than that. Still, the two leads are Christoph Waltz as a bounty hunter and Jamie Foxx as Django, the slave that he buys and then trains to be his deputy as they track down the murderous Brittle brothers.

Oh, but their other big antagonist is plantation owner Calvin Candie, played by Leonardo DiCaprio with a lot of smarminess and unfortunate facial hair. (Other great character names include Christoph's bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz and Kerry Washington as Broomhilda, Django's wife.)

This movie has that same slightly anachronistic humor of Inglourious Basterds; as Slashfilm points out, Tarantino seems more focused on the bizarre humor than portraying the more serious horrors of slavery. I think it looks fantastic; the only thing that has me sad, now that I know this exists, is that I have to wait til December 25. Yes, it's completely the kind of Christmas Day movie my family would go see.
