While I’m Sad To See Dexter End, I Think A Deb Spin-off Is A Tad Much

Season 7 Finale of Dexter 12-2012

It's no surprise that the 8th season of Dexter will be its last, and I'm not sure I've found the proper words to bid adieu to my first favorite, non-network television show.  Dexter was kind of groundbreaking, you know?  It's got one hell of a dedicated fan base because it was one of the first television shows that introduced viewers to incredible television. No network regulations, no bleeped-out swear words.  Just real, gritty, no-holds-barred entertainment that helped spawn a generation of shows on Showtime and HBO with a similar approach.

That being said, I don't think we devoted Dexter fans need a “Deb” spin-off   The Hollywood Reporter interviewed Showtime Boss David Nevins about the wrap-up of the series, and mentioned that they “had heard” about a possible spin-off revolving around Deb Morgan.  Mmm… nope.  No thanks.  I'm good. Jennifer Carpenter is great and I love Deb (most of the time), but I don't see how dragging out the dysfunctional Morgan family storyline would be a good decision.  While nothing is set in stone and there are no active plans to create this new show just yet, it isn't being ruled out:

“All options are on the table as to where it could go after this. There's nothing actively happening, but you never know what the future holds. We need to get through this season and see how the dust settles and then see where we go from there.”

I get where he's coming from, but really how much farther can we stretch our interest in Deb?  she's always been a secondary character to Dexter, since the show is named for him and revolves around him and all.  Are we going to follow her into the throes of alcoholism (see below for a sneak peek at Deb's downward spiral in the season 8 premiere)?  Are we going to follow her forays with Miami Spray Tans R Us?  I sincerely doubt she'll still be Lt. Morgan of Miami Metro when season 8 is said and done, so why drag it out?

While I'm sure I'll be in mourning when season 8 and Michael C. Hall in skintight Henleys comes to an end, it does actually need to end.  Don't be like The Office, okay, Dexter?  Everyone knows that show should have ended three or four seasons ago and The Farm spin-off getting cancelled before it could even begin was a real blessing.
