Demi Lovato’s Friends Abandoned Her After Rehab, Because Humans Are The Worst
Ugh, you guys. Sometimes human beings are really great and I love them, and sometimes I get really mad at them, like Demi Lovato‘s friends who abandoned her after she got out of rehab. She got out in January of 2011, having been treated for bulimia and cutting, as well as other non-publicized issues, and as she told Company magazine for their June issue:
“A couple of months before I went to rehab, I had a birthday party and there were a couple of hundred people there. It was full of people who I considered my closest friends. When I turned my phone on after being in rehab for three months, I expected lots of text messages and phone calls. I had four texts. That was a wake up call.”
Ugh. I hate that. I'm really glad that Demi was at a good enough place to think of it as a wake-up call instead of the kind of obstacle that could derail her recovery, but that's still so shitty of her friends. I guess it makes sense that the people who encouraged you to party and did nothing to support you when you turned to self-harming behaviors might not be around after you got treatment for those behaviors, but it still breaks my heart
a little a lot. It sounds like she's on a much better friend-track these days, though, telling the magazine that she's okay even though she doesn't have ‘loads of friends' anymore:
“I used to, but then I realized, do any of them actually care? Now I have people who, if I break my leg in the middle of the night, they’ll come to the hospital with me. Or they’ll answer the phone at 4 a.m. if I need them.”
Hurray! I think that's the exact right way to go about things. If people don't make you feel good, then don't bother hanging around them. It's a waste of everyone's time, and you are way too fabulous to put up with that kind of bull-honkery.
