Demi Lovato Continues Pushing For Body Acceptance With ‘Healthy Is The New Skinny’ T-Shirt

Demi Lovato "healthy is the new skinny" t shirt eating disorder stay strong mtvAfter her rehab stint in 2010, Demi Lovato has appointed herself a spokeswoman for healthy body image. Although she's admitted to experimenting with drugs and alcohol, the Disney star's problems stemmed largely from her eating disorder.

To keep other impressionable girls from falling into the same self-hatred, she's championed a healthy body and lifestyle; she recently called out her old employers at Disney for running an episode of Shake It Up where one character joked about not eating. Disney pulled the episode, and a PR rep apologized. Similarly, she was spotted wearing a T-shirt that reads Healthy is the new skinny at a recent trip to Disneyland.

It's unclear how recent this photo is, but it's no surprise that we're seeing it now: Demi's documentary Demi Lovato: Stay Strong premieres on MTV next Tuesday. She let MTV News follow her around in the months after she got out of rehab and made her way back into the entertainment industry, including locking horns with Disney and getting the tattoos “stay” and “strong” on her wrists over her cutting scars.

She's also doing interviews, like this one with CTV News where she admits that she had considered quitting showbiz altogether after rehab. She left her Disney show Sonny with a Chance, but she wasn't ready to give up what she actually loved. “There are so many pressures that are put on to you when you're in this industry,” she said. “But I love doing it, I love singing, I don't want to give that up just because the going gets tough.”

In addition to the words on her wrists, Demi also got a heart tattoo on one wrist. She explained,

“My fans used to draw [hearts] on their wrists every day that I was in treatment. I thought what better way to say thank you than to get one tattooed on my wrist. It was incredible to have that support and I wouldn't be in the position I'm in today without them. I look at my wrists every day and I'm very thankful to my fans.”

Call me a softie, but maybe the blind items aren't true and Demi is able to move forward positively and do her part to help the fans who helped her.
