Crush This: Alyssa Milano’s New Sitcom, ‘Glee’ Sings Madonna

By  |

Romantically ChallengedWelcome to Crush This, your weekly guide to what’s new in movies, music and TV. We’ve navigated the inner reaches of our entertainment-obsessed brains in search of all the pop culture landscape has to offer. On deck this week: J. Lo in The Back-up Plan, Alyssa Milano's back on TV with Romantically Challenged and Glee covers Madonna songs on a new special album.

TV: Alyssa Milano is back on TV. In the new ABC sitcom Romantically Challenged, which debuts tonight at 9:32 p.m. ET, she plays Rebecca, a newly single divorcee testing the dating waters once again. Although ABC is helping to revive the sitcom with the brilliant Modern Family, we don't think Romantically Challenged will help us forget that they canceled Samantha Who?. Also this week, Party Down, “the best comedy you haven't heard of”, returns to Starz with its second season on Friday at 10 p.m. ET. And, this show has a Glee connection: Megan Mullally is stepping in for Jane Lynch, who is too busy with Glee to star in the quirky show about party caterers and their misadventures. And after Party Down, at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Starz is debuting a new show Gravity, about a support group for people who have tried to commit suicide. Sounds like a Nick Hornby book.

Movies: Jennifer Lopez returns to the rom-com genre that made her famous with The Back-up Plan, in theaters on Friday. If you've missed the endless, cloying promos for this movie, here's a rundown of the plot: J. Lo plays a New York woman who is desperate for a child but hasn't found the right man yet. After opting for artificial insemination, she meets the man of her dreams, and so husband and baby come all at once, just not in the order she was expecting. Kind of like Baby Mama without the surrogate. Australian cutie Alex O'Loughlin plays her love interest, a huge break for the relative newcomer. We expect bigger things to come.

Also in theaters Friday, The Losers, a movie about a rag tag group of crime fighters, starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans and Idris Elba.

Music: Last week, we were soooo excited about the return of Glee, and this week we'll get to see all our Gleeks performing Madonna covers. What could be better? How about a special seven-song album featuring all those songs? Glee: The Music — The Power of Madonna, sung by the cast of Glee is available on Amazon starting Tuesday.

Also this week: Crazy Heart, which earned Jeff Bridges a Best Actor Oscar, it out on DVD Tuesday.
