We Live In A World Where Someone Sent Jared Leto A Human Ear As Fan Mail

Whatever happened to the days of sending Justin Timberlake a picture you drew of him with macaroni glued down to the paper as his hair because that's what his hair looked like back then anyway? Or what about a good old-fashioned acrostic poem? Hell, even throwing underwear onstage at a concert seems so totally normal these days. But I guess nothing says “I'm a fan” quite like a severed ear and a creepy note. I mean, if you have two ears, why not just be rid of one and let your favorite celebrity have it, am I right? Spoiler: I'm not right.

Jared Leto revealed in an interview with XFM that a crazy fan once sent an ear to him. A severed ear, mind you, not an ear in an envelope with a human being attached to it. Just so we're clear.

“Someone cut their ear off once and sent it to me, that was very strange. A whole ear. The Van Gogh move. The note just said, ‘Are you listening?' I never knew who it was, who's missing their ear out there.”

Not only was the fan crazy enough to cut off their ear or some other poor soul's ear, find out Jared Leto's address, and send it to him, but they decided they should also add a creepy, stalkery note, just to make sure Jared understood it was purposeful. As in, they didn't just accidentally put the ear in the envelope while handling their weekly correspondence and then wonder why a heartfelt fan letter was sitting on their bathroom counter instead of the ear they reattach each morning.

Besides the obvious question I have after reading this story, which is “WHAT?!?!?!” I also have to wonder what Jared was supposed to be listening to? And why would someone else's ear help him listen better? Three ears do not a better listener make if one of the ears is a stranger's ear. Didn't Ben Franklin say that?

And then Jared went on to say that he poked a hole in the ear and made a necklace out of it, adding, “Just don't put your entire body in a case and send it to us.” Because that's where you gotta draw the line, you know? Not at any body part before that. Just at the whole body. That's where it gets really creepy.

When did we start living in a world where people think this is the right way to behave as a fan? Isn't it bad enough that teenage girls go digging through Liam Payne's family garden like maniacs looking for concert tickets or that they send death threats to his puppy? Can't we just all agree that if we wouldn't want to receive a human ear in the mail, we probably shouldn't send one to our favorite star? Although that golden rule might not be very effective with the kind of people who cut off their ears in the first place.
