’90s Kids Will Take It Especially Hard That Courteney Cox Is Dropping ‘Arquette’ From Her Name

Courteney Cox Arquette David Arquette divorce drop nameEver since Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette first announced their separation in 2010, we knew this day would come. For nearly two years they've swung back and forth between maybe reconciling and stories of David out on the town with skanky ladies; they starred in Scream 4 together without murdering each other; and they've made plenty of red carpet appearances. But Courteney has finally filed for divorce… and worse yet, she's legally dropping “Arquette” from her name.

This cuts deep for anyone who grew up in the '90s: Courteney and David met on the set of Scream in 1996, and actually waited a couple of years before getting hitched. I'll always remember tuning in to Friends one night in 1999, the infamous “The One After Vegas” episode where Ross and Rachel have drunkenly gotten married, and Chandler and Monica are worried about their relationship moving too fast. In the opening credits, the producers slyly added an “Arquette” to every cast member's last name. Since the credits always start alphabetically with Courteney, it took a second for the joke to sink in. That's still one of my favorite TV moments.

But, back to reality: Courteney and David both filed on June 8, citing “irreconciliable differences,” and yet neither is using a lawyer. They've always said that they would make things easy on their daughter Coco, so it sounds like they're trying to make this as amicable as possible.
