Video: This Is Why You Don’t Call Christina Hendricks ‘Full-Figured’ In An Interview

By  |

These days when we see Christina Hendricks get angry, it's in the very controlled, classy fashion that her Mad Men character Joan Holloway displays. But watching her in this interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, she brought to mind the cold fury of her Firefly character Saffron. In short, she gets really pissed when poor Kate Waterhouse asks what it's like to be the inspiration as a full-figured woman.

As you can see in the interview above, they go through this awkwardness twice. The first time Christina gives a slightly bitchy, tight smile and demurs, “I don't know.” But almost immediately, she tosses a look at her handlers off-camera and pleads with them to not ask this kind of stuff. Of course, poor Kate thinks she just wants the question rephrased; on the second time, she almost loses it and bursts out, “I mean, you just said it again! It's so de…” I think she started to say “depressing” but then didn't want to get caught on-camera putting down full-figured women. Of which she is one. Come on, Christina!

On the one hand, I can see why she's frustrated that she's been asked this since Mad Men premiered in 2007, but there's no getting around it: At least judging by her breasts, Christina isn't a stick-thin Hollywood actress. And that's a good thing! She is easily more gorgeous than most of the bobbleheaded stars walking the red carpets, and she has a stylist who makes her look even more dynamite. I'd say that she's the name that most comes up among my male friends, geeks and non-geeks alike.

And it's not like Christina has ever had a problem talking about her body before. In 2010, she told Health magazine, “It’s such a compliment, because of all those times I had agents who were like, ‘You have to lose some weight,' and all of a sudden, people are celebrating it.” Sure, it must be frustrating to think that people only want to talk about her body, but it's not like she's allowed to provide any intel on Mad Men. And I'm sorry, but whatever glasses event she was promoting in Australia sounds like a snore.

I feel like the interviewer must've caught Christina on a bad day, because she gets almost as defensive in the beginning of the interview when they talk about her glasses. This is the first time I've seen her in specs and I look at photo databases all day, so it's reasonable for Kate to mention that she'd never seen her wearing any. Christina immediately responds that she's worn them to awards shows — really? — but when Kate says that she'd Googled and not found any photos, Christina says, “Really? Oh, there's definitely some on there. I can think of one in particular.” All she has to do to get her self-esteem up is Google “Firefly Saffron” and she'll get more than enough praise for her acting prowess.
