As much as it may seem otherwise, I think we can all admit that it's pretty hard out there for celebrities. No matter how much money you make or how famous you get, it can never really account for having your entire life under a microscope, with paparazzi hounding you 24/7 and bloggers like me judging and snarking on your every move. It's completely understandable that someone would crack under that type of pressure — especially considering that non-famous people crack under far less on a daily basis.

Which is why I'm so impressed when celebs are able to put their own needs first, with no thought to how it might appear in the media, and I'm referring mostly to celebrities who have gone to rehab. Addiction is an easy trap to fall into, as we've seen time and time again, but a difficult one to pull yourself out of, making it all the more impressive when people dedicate themselves to a healthier lifestyle, one of recovery.

There are always gonna be temptations and obstacles and slip-ups, but here are 12 Inspiring Celebrities Who Did Rehab Right, by refusing to be shamed by the social stigma of addiction, and making their health a priority.

1. Ke$ha

Ke$ha checked herself into rehab for an eating disorder in January 2014, bravely telling the press:

“I’m a crusader for being yourself and loving yourself, but I’ve found it hard to practice.  I’ll be unavailable for the next 30 days, seeking treatment for my eating disorder … to learn to love myself again, exactly as I am.”

Well said, lady. Hope you get the help and support you need.

2. Zac Efron

Early in 2013, Zac reportedly went to rehab, although the news about it didn't break until September. But even with all the media swarming around, he refused to explain what he'd gone in for — he's content just to wear his six-month sober living chip. Kudos.

3. Catherine Zeta-Jones

CZJ suffers from Bipolar II, which is characterized by ‘mood swings and depressive episodes, and is commonly treated with medication and psychotherapy.’ But instead of letting it get out of hand, she checks into rehab from time to time, just as she did in April 2013, a move that her rep explained by saying her client “is committed to periodic care in order to manage her health in an optimum manner.” Love it.

4. The Situation

I despaired all hope for most of the Jersey Shore cast, considering how richly they were rewarded for rapidly destroying their bodies with drugs and alcohol — so I was super impressed when Mike ‘The Situation' Sorrentino not only went to rehab for opiate addiction, but did an entire additional season on the show without once succumbing to temptation. Takes real strength.

5. Demi Lovato

I've made no secret of how obsessed I am with Demi Lovato. Although she stumbled into addiction early on in her career, while she was still underage, she committed hard to rehab, cutting off bad influences when she got out, and using her experience to educate her young fans in hopes of helping them avoid making the same mistakes.

6. Philip Seymour Hoffman

After twenty-three years of sobriety, Philip Seymour Hoffman had one of those stumbling blocks that addicts are all too familiar with, and relapsed into addiction starting ‘slowly, with prescription pills, and recently escalated to snorting heroin'. He entered and completed a ten-day rehab stint in May 2013, and we applaud him for getting back on track.

Update: on February 2nd, 2014, Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead, presumably from a drug overdose. This tragedy is still in the very early stages, so there isn't much information available so far, but it serves as a chilling reminder that addiction is a very real disease, and should be treated as such. All too often, even with the best efforts and intentions on the part of the addict, it still claims lives.

7. Lindsay Lohan

Laugh all you want, but it takes a certain kind of stamina to keep attempting rehab after six stints, the way LiLo has. A lot of people give up after failing that many times, but Lindsay really seems dedicated this time around.

8. Matthew Perry

He has struggled with alcohol and prescription pain medication in the past, and although he hasn't relapsed, he entered his third rehab stay since 1997, saying in May 2011, “I'm making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery.”

9. Eva Mendes

After rumored substance abuse, she entered rehab in 2008, with her rep stating, “Eva has been working hard for the past year and made a positive decision to take some much-needed time off to proactively attend to some personal issues that, while not critical, she felt deserved some outside professional support.” And since she appears to be healthy and happy since, we couldn't be prouder of her.

10. Ben Affleck

I didn't even realize this, but apparently Ben went through rehab in 2001 for alcohol addiction, although many of the people close to him didn't even realize he was struggling. Ben's former high school teacher said, “He didn't like how he was feeling and saw the signs. People were telling him, ‘Hey, what's going on?' and he said, ‘You know what? I think I better go take care of it.'” And look at him now!

11. Amanda Bynes

After months of her erratic, worrying behavior being ignored and mocked, Amanda was finally placed under involuntary hospitalization after setting a fire in a stranger's driveway in Summer 2013. She stayed in treatment for three months for rumored schizophrenia, and after responding to medications, has been released to the care of her parents. Best wishes on continued recovery.

12. Cory Monteith

The fact that Cory was so open about his struggles, dedicated to recovery, and proactive about rehab only serves to underline the devastation wreaked by addiction. Cory struggled against it, but unfortunately lost his battle in July 2013, after an overdose on heroin combined with alcohol. A tragic lesson about taking this disease seriously.
