Ten Celebrities In Fraternities, Ranked From Total Bro To Huh?

By  |

Infamous dare devil Johnny Knoxville was allegedly drugged at a frat house recently. He may be a little too old to be hanging around a college campus, but it was during a promo shoot for his upcoming movie, Bad Grandpa. Because it's Johnny Knoxville, he had only positive things to say about unwittingly taking ecstasy, but still, did he seriously never learn the “don't leave your drink unattended” rule? Especially at a frat party, man.

Johnny Knoxville himself was never a member of a fraternity, so maybe he wasn't aware of the dangers of “hazing.” These ten celebrities were initiated into Greek life back in their college days before they were initiated into fame and fortune. I can picture some of them wearing Sperry shoes and popped collars (or whatever the fratty attire was back in their day), but some I can't picture saying “bro” regardless of how hard I try. So, from least surprising to most surprising, ten celebrities who were in fraternities in college:

1. Matthew McConaughey

Maybe this is just me, but I didn't even have to Google this one to fact-check it because it's so obvious. Austin is fortunately warm enough that Matthew could be shirtless almost year-round, as is typical of him. I've been to a frat party in Texas and it was definitely 20-year-old Matthew McConaughey's scene. Can't you just picture him holding a bottle of beer and slapping the back of every one of his “brothers” as he makes his way towards the hottest sorority sister in the room?

2. Tim McGraw

Maybe it's a Southern thing, but picturing Tim in a bow tie and khakis, calling his professors “sir” when he misses yet another class due to a kegger-induced hangover just comes naturally. Tim attended university on a baseball scholarship, so he was one of those athlete frat boys that get even more attention.

3. Ashton Kutcher

Ashton was probably the frat boy who hazed all of the pledges with elaborate pranks and public humiliation stunts. I picture him as the ultimate lax bro: in a backwards ball cap and reversible penny doing lots of beer bongs. The only surprising part about Ashton being in a fraternity is that while at the University of Iowa he studied biochemical engineering.

4. Brad Pitt

You know how every fraternity has a pretty boy? That was Brad Pitt. He drank beer out of glasses, not solo cups. He actually cleaned his room on the weekends (if only because he was hoping to bring a girl back). He may have made pledges do his laundry for him, but only because he really wanted clean clothes and had a major test to study for. He did end up dropping out early to pursue his acting career, but since he become so successful, his brothers forgave him.

5. Jeremy Piven

Oh yes, Ari Gold would be a frat brother. Dare him to jump off the roof of the frat house? Done. Looking for the baby pool? Jeremy already filled it with beer. Eat his Pizza Rolls? You're looking at a fat lip, bro.

6. Will Ferrell

Will, like Ashton, was a jokester. Not so much by playing jokes on others, but by being the joke himself. You know, the student who pretends to be a professor the first day of class, the guy who runs across the football field wearing nothing but body paint and the head of the mascot costume, which he stole. But he's so well-liked, everyone is laughing with him, even while laughing at him.

7. Ty Burrell

You may not have realized Ty was a member of your fraternity because he didn't attend that many events. He was too busy studying, doing well so he could fulfill his plans to continue his post-grad education, or working, making money to pay off the student loans from the three schools he attended. But when he did come to the party, he was the perfect wingman, and always down for taking shots.

8. Tom Selleck

Maybe this one is difficult for me because I can't picture a frat bro with Tom's famous mustache. His Ramen noodles would get caught in it! More than once, Tom was mistaken for another fraternity brother's dad because of his mature appearance. The upside was that he could buy alcohol without getting ID'ed as a freshman.

9. Paul Rudd

I know this is a terribly stereotypical thing to say, but Paul seems too…nice to be in a fraternity. He would clean up after every party, even if he only had two beers. He walked all the drunk girls home without expecting anything in return. He never even called a pledge a bad word.

10. Jon Stewart

Y'all are with me on this one being surprising, right? Jon is too cynical to want to be in an organization of brotherhood and too sarcastic to be understood once he joins. Apparently Jon thought so too, because he dropped out after six months, claiming it was “pointless.”
