New Hunger Games Map Reveals That Finnick Odair’s Ancestor Is Christian Grey?

Finnick Odair Christian Grey ancestor The Hunger Games Adventures Panem map District 4 Pacific Northwest Forks WashingtonOn last night's Hunger Games Fireside Chat podcast, we got to talking about two important developments in the Catching Fire ‘verse: 1) Set photos and 2) the official map of Panem. The Facebook game The Hunger Games Adventures revealed the Panem map to us a few months ago, but Lionsgate is taking its sweet time in actually unlocking the districts.

However, we got a treat in that now we can actually see where District 4 is… and it's not what we expected at all. As you'll note on the map below, The Powers That Be have decreed that the fishing district from which Finnick Odair hails is in the Pacific Northwest—northern California, Oregon, and Washington. There are palm trees and two people standing on a dock; maybe Finnick and Annie, or Katniss and Peeta.

Now, many of us on the Fireside Chat were convinced that District 4 was that mass of land where Mexico used to be, bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. You had plenty of coastline and warmer waters, plus it would've been cool for Finnick and fellow tribute Mags to be Latino. But instead, we had to make up theories for how it would make sense for Finnick to grow up in a rather cold part of the country despite spending most of his time in the water. The best theories we got were something about hot currents being forced up from the Equator.

But you know what else a panelist realized? The Pacific Northwest is home to Forks, Washington, the setting for Stephenie Meyer‘s Twilight series. And of course from there it's just the tiniest of mental leaps to Seattle, Washington, and the office of a certain Mr. Christian Grey.

CHRISTIAN GREY IS FINNICK ODAIR'S ANCESTOR. Like, really distant since Panem is a couple hundred years from now, but I bet that the Grey genes found their way into the Odair family. As one of the Fireside Chat panelists said (and I'm paraphrasing), “Think of it this way—if Edward Cullen is the hottest guy ever, it only makes sense that the ridiculously good-looking Finnick would be his descendant.” And since E.L. James has taught us that Edward is Christian, there you go.

Also, it makes eerie sense that both men know how to tie strong knots. Gulp.
