The Number Of Fans Who Showed Up To This Carly Rae Jepsen Event Will Depress You

Carly Rae Jepsen Davids Tea January 2014

Carly Rae Jepsen was recently cast to play Cinderella on Broadway — to the horror of one Sarah Hyland — but her life these days is starting to look more like a reverse rags-to-riches tale. Yesterday Carly hosted an event at Davids Tea in Yorkdale Mall in Toronto, Canada. The number of fans that showed up to see her, as reported by The Daily Mail, might give you a case of the saddies. If you're not familiar with the saddies, it's that thing you feel when you witness a celebrity's fame slipping through their fingers. Are you ready to hear the number? Leave now if you don't want to be depressed.

The number is 20. Now, I wasn't there so I don't know what the circumstances were around who was allowed in or whether there were spots reserved in advance or if it was just a free-for-all. But as someone who's had to maneuver around a winding line of teenager girls waiting to see a punk band I'd never heard of at the mall, I would have expected a bigger turnout for Carly Rae Jepsen, especially since she's Canadian. Show some love for your people, Canada! (Except Justin Bieber.)

The event was part of the Cup of Warmth campaign, which aids hunger relief charities by donating a cup of tea to charity for each cup sold in their store. Their goal is to donate 30,000 cups of tea to local shelters. That's a pretty big goal, so I'm betting they wanted a lot of people to show up. So what gives, Toronto? You can't take a few minutes away from shopping to drink a cuppa and support one of your greatest musical exports of the 21st century? For shame!

Carly Rae posed with a few of the fans around a sign reading “Steep Me Maybe.” Haaaa, clever. If you look deep into Carly's eyes, you can see her starting to write the song “Come to My Event, Maybe, No Seriously Please Somebody Show Up, I Can Feel Myself Falling Off the Face of the Earth, Help!”
