Carly Rae Jepsen Backs Out Of Boy Scout Concert, Earns My Hardcore Respect

After long months of snoozing, the Canadian gem Carly Rae Jepsen is slowly shedding her winter coat and preparing for the busy warmer months ahead. Oh did I not…tell you guys about my Carly Rae Jepsen theory? That she's a creature of the sunlight who sleeps during the winter and only comes into her full plumage when it's time to make a summer hit? Think about it — when do you ever see her during the wintertime? She just showed fully-rested and out of nowhere last summer to release ‘Call Me Maybe' and then disappeared back into her den as soon as she detected a chill in the air. It's why she's aging so slowly, because she hibernates for half the year. SCIENCE.

So since it's March, right now she's waking slowly from her winter nap, rubbing the sleep from her eyes and stretching her muscles as she looks around her cave. And what's the first thing that caught her eye? A calendar of her upcoming tour dates. “Wait, what?” growls Carly, stomach grumbling for a handful of berries or a salmon caught fresh and wiggling out of the river. “I'm supposed to do a concert for the notoriously homophobic Boy Scouts of America at their annual Jamboree? What is the meaning of this? Where is my hamburger phone?!” But Carly was just waking up and hadn't even coughed up her tappen yet (look it up), so her publicist urged her to wait until she'd awoken fully to make the following statement based on the Scouts' ban on ‘openly gay scouts and scout leaders':

“As an artist who believes in equality for all people, I will not be participating in the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree this summer. I always have and will continue to support the LGBT community on a global level…and stay informed on the ever changing landscape in the ongoing battle for gay rights in this country and across the globe.”

Bear stuff aside, this statement gives me a massive respect-boner for Carly Rae. It takes a lot of backbone to sacrifice a paycheck for something you believe in, especially when it's as weirdly controversial as gay rights. She didn't hide behind a publicist or make an excuse, and as a result she's promoting a wonderful example of tolerance to her young cubs worldwide. I mean fans. I mean scouts. I mean bears.
