Clothes on the Road
me rockin' out on stage
Jared & 30 Seconds to Mars
Hello! I'm Tyler from the band Neon Trees. (That's me with the silver bowtie.)

It's a fun and sometimes interesting challenge to be on the road and take your closet. In fact, it's almost impossible, especially when you're a band in a van, but still want to maintain your sense of style.

I'm kind of a grab bag when I dress. I'm probably a mix of Gossip Girl's Jenny Humphrey and Chuck Bass. Sometimes a bowtie and tailored suitcoat, sometimes a long tank and leather style jacket, but always incredibly tight black skinny pants, with the zippers at the ankle to ensure the tightness.

I don't care what anyone has to say on the topic -- the tight pants are the best for a live show. They let me do the high kicks and the running around I desire live. Plus, once you go tight, you never go back.

I tend to be more of a tailored punk look. I love old vintage jackets from different decades and combining them with cheap threads. A 12 dollar pair of black jeans at Forever 21 serve the purpose, and if I rip a hole in the knee, or a less desirable area, I can get another pair quickly. I think the most crucial things in my closet are rad jackets and coats, and radical shoes.

Being on tour with 30 Seconds to Mars is cool beyond the obvious things like playing for huge crowds of rabid fans and having the band be exposed to a lot of new places and faces. I enjoy seeing what Jared is wearing during the performance. I like that he sees style as an important part of the show, and you can tell there is thought put into it. Our merch girl Kate definitely covets his metallic Nikes, and I am jealous of his custom pyramid stud jackets.

This tour I have only been wearing red and black tones. The red really pops on stage underneath lights. I find it's really grabbed the audience right off the bat because you can see me (or a big red mess) all the way in the back of the venue. I sport the long red trench every night to open the show because it's bright and sort of menacing as well, but it doesn't last to long because it gets super hot real quick.

The red leather jacket by Goya Vintage has been an awesome look while playing the tour. It's sort of Michael Jackson meets Mick Jagger, and it pops over my basic white tank. My friend Corey Fox sold it to me after he inherited it from the set of a vampire movie filmed a few years ago.

In terms of shoes, Chucks are totally comfortable and classic, but I was happy to find these silver ones made by John Varvatos down in Miami, because they popped more and had a special vibe to them. The gold boots have that look of a Doc Marten derby boot, but were splashed in gold by John Fluevog, whom I love.

Accessorizing is an important touch to me, especially while performing. I have been cutting a piece of this sequin silver fabric every night and tying them to my belt loops of wrists.

I also tape my fingers with bright colors, as I learned from MJ, to draw attention to what your hands are doing, and I tend to be very expressive with those appendages, so it's a nice touch.

'Til next time...
Tyler
