Even With A Month To Go, We’re Calling ‘Pop Danthology 2012’ The Best Pop Song Mash-Up Of The Year

By  |

I can't stop listening to Daniel Kim‘s incredible, 55-song mash-up Pop Danthology 2012 since one of his friends posted it to Reddit last night. I know, I posted a similar mash-up just two weeks ago, but this one has twice as many songs and is a much more nuanced mix!

Here's how I see it: I feel like DJ Robin Skouteris‘ “PopLove” mix was an ode to all of the 2012 pop songs we hated, but that showed the redeeming facets of each: Ke$ha‘s “Die Young,” Justin Bieber‘s “Girlfriend,” Maroon 5‘s “Moves Like Jagger,” etc. But Pop Danthology 2012's net is cast wider, and the songs are mixed together more tightly, really examining where the beats match up.

Kim provides some great insight into his process on his blog, showing how he lines up songs to be in the right tempo and key, then slides them together like puzzle pieces. Here's the list of all 55 songs. Unfortunately it's in alphabetical order rather than according to their places within the video, but you should be able to follow along anyway.

The most interesting reaction from a Redditor — and my friends who I sent this mix to over gchat while writing this post — was that this collection creates a weird sort of “nostalgia” for the past twelve months. I gotta agree! There are plenty of songs that I forgot came out this year, and the way they blended together made for a fun game of “oh yeah, I gotta pull that up on its own to listen to next!” Also, props to Kim for mashing up Rihanna and Psy around 5:14. It shouldn't work, but it so does.

Plus, Kim has got Pop Danthologies for 2011 and 2010! So enjoy this soundtrack for the rest of your Monday.
