Ben Affleck Considering Running For Senate — I Blame The Beard

By  |

artois awards arrivals 301012Put a little beard on Ben Affleck and all of a sudden he gets all sorts of ideas. He thinks he can do a good job directing movies like Argo, he thinks he can cast himself in said movies and do a good job, and he thinks that if he ran for Senate, people would take him seriously. And you know what? I think he's right about all of those.

I didn't actually realize this, but Ben is already pretty politically active. He went to Washington DC to testify before Congress on behalf of the humanitarian crisis in the Congo, and he was interviewed there by Bob Schieffer, who asked him if he'd consider a run for Senate. Here's Ben's response:

“For one thing, the state of Massachusetts currently has two extraordinary senators, so there is no vacancy.”

But when Bob pointed out that there could be, if John Kerry is chosen to fill Hillary Clinton's vacancy as Secretary Of State, Ben continued:

“Well, one never knows. I'm not one to get into conjecture. I have a great fondness and admiration for the political process in this country. It's a big deal for me to come down here and be on your show…but I'm not going to get into speculation about my political future. Right now, I'm really happy being involved from the outside in government, advocating for the Congolese, taking this movie that I made, Argo, that's really become a springboard for dialogue about our relationship with Iran, which, as Hillary Clinton said, is the most pressing foreign policy issue today, so…I got a lot on my plate.”

Ooh, what a coy little darling! But it sounds like the seed of an idea is definitely there, and Ben has surprised us before, so I'm certainly not ruling it out. Remember, this human who's currently getting Oscar buzz is the same man who did the films Pearl Harbor and GigliSo don't you dare count him out. That beard is all-powerful, and I actually think he'd probably be kind of great.
