In Case You Were Wondering, Ashley Olsen Is Quitting Acting

It's like last year, when Amanda Bynes announced her retirement from acting, and then a week later slunk back with the tweet i've unretired. By contrast to her Easy  A co-star Emma Stone, Amanda seemed plastic and just plain bad. We didn't need her to act anymore because we didn't care.

It's sort of like that with Ashley Olsen: Who gives a fig what the older Olsen twins are up to, when we have their fantastic younger sister Elizabeth Olsen making waves in the industry? However, that hasn't stopped Ashley from volunteering the information in an interview with ELLE UK.

She explained how she and Mary-Kate worked nonstop from their infant days on Full House, through all of their branded movies and home videos, and then hit 18 and wanted to take a breather. They spent some time at NYU before dropping out to build up their fashion empire. She says she doesn't regret the decision:

“It was time to step behind the process. I wanted to work on other things. It doesn't mean I'm not interested in Hollywood, I like the way it operates and the people who are involved and the sense of possibility. But if I ever do get back in, it's not going to be as an actress.”

Maybe I'm going about this wrong. Maybe I should be congratulating Ashley for recognizing that her talent doesn't lie in acting — her last movie role was the 2004 flop New York Minute — and that she's better served working on designs and keeping her and Mary-Kate's brand alive. Although it is interesting to note that Mary-Kate has kept on the acting train with a recurring role on Weeds, as well as oddball parts in The Wackness and Beastly.

Regardless, whether we actually care about Ashley's retirement, we shouldn't forget that everything is inter-related. As I said last year, we probably wouldn't have appreciated Elizabeth's debut in Martha Marcy May Marlene if her sisters hadn't failed to become movie stars themselves.
