Sorry Drama Queens, Andrew Garfield Didn’t Skip The Oscars Because He’s A Diva

Andrew Garfield Emma Stone Spiderman Premiere 2012

People have been buzzing for a few days now about what could have caused Andrew Garfield to skip Sunday's Oscars ceremony, where he was scheduled to present. He was replaced last-minute by Chris Evans, and if you believe a new report from Page Six, it was because Andrew was being a diva about his segment with San Francisco's now-famous Batkid. But before you throw your Amazing Spider-Man DVD in the trash, let's talk about why that rumor's a bunch of baloney.

In keeping with the “heroes” theme of the night, Andrew was supposed to appear on stage with Miles Scott, AKA Batkid, the 5-year-old boy with cancer who got to play superhero in San Francisco last year as part of the Make-a-Wish program. According to Page Six's “well-placed source,” the segment got cut because “in the middle of the dress rehearsal, Garfield decided he didn’t like his lines.” The source added that he had a “tantrum” and “stormed off,” leaving Miles and his family “devastated.”

That's an incredibly over-the-top account of the supposed events that I was already taking with approximately two million grains of salt. But now there's an actual statement to E! News from an Academy spokesperson explaining why the segment was cut.

“Due to the nature of a live show, hard decisions sometimes must be made which require the Academy to cut segments due to the logistics of production,” the spokesperson tells E! News in a statement. “Andrew Garfield understood that his segment had to be omitted, and he drove to Disneyland on Monday to spend time with 5-year-old Miles Scott (Batkid) and his family.”

Natalie Scott, Miles' mother, also spoke to the International Business Times about the last-minute change, saying she didn't totally understand the reasoning. She says, “It is kind of a disappointment, but things happen. I know that's how TV goes and how Hollywood is. We're just not used to that.” So no Andrew Garfield tantrum?

It's not clear why Andrew had to be replaced by Chris Evans and didn't present the changed heroes segment himself. According to a Radar Online report from earlier this week, a source said his girlfriend Emma Stone had “a long standing family commitment in Arizona” and Andrew might have chosen to accompany her. Whether that ended up happening in addition to the production problem is up in the air, but I still don't buy that Andrew was the root of the problem.
