Andrew Garfield Wanted Spider Man To Be Gay, Producers Were Strangely Not On Board

Andrew Garfield and Dane DeHaan filming Amazing Spider Man 2 2013I can't imagine why this wasn't immediately approved by anyone and everyone close to The Amazing Spider Man, but it sounds like Andrew Garfield initially wanted his character Peter Parker to be gay, or at least bisexual. Given that I'm so often on the exact same page as the general public in regards to popular entertainment — we can all agree we want more Hangover movies, right? — I feel certain that not a single person in the entire United States would have even the slightest problem with this. I mean think about it…a popular character from the superhero canon who abandons the chesty heroine dangling from the bridge to stroll through Chelsea hand-in-hand with a mustachioed hipster, crotch bulging happily through his skintight bodysuit.

Honestly, I personally would love that, and I wish we lived in a world where that could happen (give it a few more years!). But the truth is, so many people have such strong feelings about comic book characters already, that I can't imagine that scenario ending in anything other than rioting in the streets and the burning of Spider Man effigies by the Westboro Baptist Church. I should probably slow my roll just a little bit, though, because Andrew was probably kidding. Here's what he told Entertainment Weekly in an interview prior to the cast's appearance at a Comic-Con panel this weekend about his original vision for the character of Peter Parker:

"I was like, ‘What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking!…So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"

Andrew even had his man candy all picked out, Fruitvale star Michael B. Jordan, about whom he says, “He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better — we'd have interracial bisexuality!” Yes, absolutely middle America is ready for that. Andrew does say he's 'joking but also not joking', but why beat around the bush, guys! We live in a country where Big Brother contestants are still comfortable airing their racism and homophobia on national televsion for all to see! What could go wrong?
