Make up your mind, Alec Baldwin! Ever since we first heard a year or so ago that 30 Rock‘s days were numbered, we knew that it was due in part to one of its stars not wanting to stick around for another season. And face it, the best part of 30 Rock is the dynamic between Liz Lemon and Jack Donaghy; to have Tina Fey play off anyone else would be an entirely different sitcom. So we accepted our paltry 13 episodes — and super-sized series finale — which starts tonight, and made our peace with starting to say goodbye to everyone. Then this morning Alec Baldwin tweeted,

I offered NBC to cut my pay 20% in order to have a full 7th and 8th seasons of 30 Rock. I realize times have changed.

I feel like this is some Donaghy mind game. What is he trying to achieve here? To divert blame and cast himself as some sort of saint who always wanted to keep the show afloat? I assume that him saying “I realize times have changed” means that he got off his high horse when it came to pay after noticing a little thing called the recession. But part of me wishes that he was instead saying that he realizes how this gesture of goodwill is too little, too late.

Because as Tina said in her Entertainment Weekly cover story, they always knew their time with Baldwin was limited. She said that after season 3 they knew he would stick around for a while, but it sounds like she never expected to go beyond season 7: “I had a dinner with him when I was very pregnant with my second child to say, ‘Let’s do season 7, come on. Let’s do it!’ And he said okay. I think I had the baby the next day. And now not a day goes by that he doesn’t go around to the crew and agitate for a season 8: ‘You’ve gotta change your minds!’ It’s like, ‘It’s not really up to me — and also, no.’”

She’s probably tired of all the back-and-forth—or maybe, like us, is ready for this to be 30 Rock‘s last year. Still, I’m excited to tune in tonight! And I leave you with this, my favorite Jack Donaghy bit, from the first episode I saw:
