Honey Boo Boo’s Family Shows Oodles Of Acceptance For ‘Poodles’ (Gays) In Season Finale

Last night's season finale of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo contained a lot of action. Baby Kaitlyn was born, Alana worked it in a pageant, and Glitzy the gay pageant pig even made a special appearance. But the thing everyone seems to be talking about is the appearance of an actual gay human in McIntyre GA, namely Alana‘s Uncle Poodle. (A name Alana gave to him, as she calls all gay men poodles.)

Uncle Poodle (a.k.a. Sugar Bear‘s “baby brother” Lee) comes by to help Alana with her pageant routine, although you get the sense it's really just a contrived excuse to get him on the show. In his short screen time, we see the whole family react affectionately to his visit without a hint of anti-gay sentiment.

Granted, they accept gay people on somewhat stereotypical terms; despite Uncle Poodle not seeming particularly fruity, Mama June Shannon spits out stereotypes like “maybe he can give her some sass…he's got a little fruit in his tank,” and “You know gay men, hello, they know how to dance and make the moves.” But in a state where only 27% of people polled support same-sex marriage, this constitutes progress. There's plenty of time for Alana to learn that not all gay men participate in drag shows, as her uncle gently reminds her in this episode. “Ain't nothin' wrong with bein' a little gay” is a solid sentiment from which to build lifelong sensitivity and acceptance.

It's a little bit sad that this six-year-old child is more advanced on the topic of homosexuality than two-thirds of her fellow Georgians, but there you have it. As Gawker's Rich Juzwiak writes, Alana and the gang's hearts are in the right place, and that's what matters.
