15 Hit Songs Of 2013 That Will Survive Through 2014 And Beyond

The year 2013 was full of musical hits, but some of them were off the radio faster than someone can say “Gangnam Style.” When's the last time someone made a “Harlem Shake” video? (And thank goodness that's stopped.) After their brief “comeback” I think Fall Out Boy is back in everyone's junior high CD collection. Not every hit song of 2013 has what it takes to survive the new year. These 15 popular songs of 2013, however, just have something special that will make us want to listen to them in 2014 too…and maybe, even 2015.

So happy New Year to songs we can actually still stand!

1. Ylvis' “The Fox”

Much like Psy's “Gangnam Style,” I think this song has an extremely short shelf life but it's inevitable that it will be featured in at least one Superbowl 2014 commercial. And right now, if you type “what” into Google, “what does the fox say” is the top result. So expect to hear it a few more times before it disappears into a future VH1 decade in review series.

2. Justin Timberlake's “Mirrors”

Many of us at Crushable are a little Justin Timberlake-d out, but since he's a male celebrity and backlash doesn't exist for him, he's still everywhere. And to be honest, I actually really like this song. I think its popularity will persist into 2014 because it's so goshdarn heartfelt. Whenever rumors about his relationship with Jessica Biel start to surface, I listen to this song for reassurance that love persists. Plus it's the perfect song to sing into the mirror after you get out of the shower.

3. Lorde's “Royals”

Lorde got big in 2013 and I think she'll only get bigger in 2014. This song will stay a staple on every playlist because it was her first hit and it's one of the songs I'm actually not bothered by when someone on the subway has their iPod turned up so loudly I can hear it through their headphones. And that's saying a lot.

4. Florida Georgia Line and Nelly's “Cruise”

Regardless of how overplayed this got, it's still the perfect summer driving song. It may fall out of favor in early 2014 because it's winter and who rolls down the windows in winter? But come summertime it will be back on radios on roads across the nation.

5. Avicii and Aloe Blacc's “Wake Me Up”

I don't think we'll figure out who Aloe Blacc is any time soon, but I do think his voice on Avicii's track will make it to 2014. We're of the opinion here that it will be featured on many movie soundtracks to come. I hope Shailene Woodley likes it, because that's who I'm picturing having a stressful time with school and boys and life while this song plays in the background.
