One Direction fans 1D Family Today show March 12

Early this morning, British-Irish band One Direction performed at the Today show in New York City and about shut down traffic. Right away we knew we had to find a place for them on our 25 Crushable Guys Under 25 list.

Their fanbase is overwhelming, the kind of adulation we haven't seen since the early days of the Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber. Both in-person (above) and on Twitter/Tumblr/Omegle, the 1D Family has taken over the conversation and expressed their love for Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson.

For a fandom that's less than a year old, the 1D Family has already gotten some backlash, both within and outside of its ranks. Some fans admit to tensions between “Directioners” (old fans) and “Directionators” (new ones), especially now that performances like the Today show have firmly pushed 1D into the mainstream. They've also gotten some negative attention from the press for being especially enthusiastic; odd anecdotes like a bunch of girls asking the boys to sign their big toenails get passed around.

As long as it doesn't involve kidnapping or attempted murder, we don't want to condemn how fans express themselves. So here we're celebrating the fun, unique, passionate ways in which 1D fans pay homage to their favorite new boy band. We're new to learning about the 1D family and we've done our best to link to the correct sources, but if we got something wrong, please let us know and we'll fix it immediately.
