Mos Def, you did a phenomenal job as Chuck Berry. How did you prepare for the role?
Mos Def: I got ready for the role by reading about Chuck. YouTube was really helpful. Watching clips of him that Darnell [Martin, the director] and the producers provided me were really helpful and listening to the music and listening to the lyrics. The lyrical aspects of Mr. Berry's work are very unique and distinctive. There's something that really sets him apart from the generation of performers that he came up in and I think it sets him apart in general from a lot of musicians. Practicing the duck walk, putting a natural strain on my legs.
Jeffrey Wright: You know you're always duck walking.
Mos Def: I'm really honored to just be part of this story and be part of telling his story. He's such a large, enigmatic, mercurial, magical type of figure. I hope I did it justice. I had a good time, besides straining some leg muscles.
