The Glass Passenger is the first album you wrote since being diagnosed with leukemia. Do the songs refer to that?
I do my best to write more in the present moment, so in a lot of senses, I was out of the woods when I wrote a lot of these songs. Of course, perspective is going to be affected -- just the idea of what you've gone through is going to color the lens through which you see everything else. There are definitely moments on the record in certain songs that speak more directly to that situation, songs like "Caves" and "The Resolution." But I think in general, there was a certain level of haunting from those days that played into the songwriting on this record. My goal was to try and turn that into as much of a positive as possible, [and] if nothing else, use the songs to get past some of that and maybe reconcile some of that. And in general, I think that's how it played into the record.
