What are your memories from that age?
13 was pretty poignant for me. 9/11 had happened, and I was in Bahrain. Bahrain has always been a pretty moderate place politically. You're lucky to live there in the Middle East -- I think so, at least. But there was still some tension. I remember there was a small homemade bombing in one of the McDonalds. The school closed down for security reasons. We had snipers on our roof; we had military guards on our hallways. We also had gurkhas from Nepal. We were trained to kill people with swords. [There were] crazy barbed wires around the schools. We always had those things, but it was more now -- we got the gurkhas and the snipers all of the sudden. My parents were just like, "Wow, this is a sign. It's time to go home."
