Crazy sad news over the weekend! After performing at huge free concert in Columbia, South Carolina on Friday night, DJ AM and Travis Barker boarded a jet that went off the runway during takeoff, and then crashed and burst into flames. According to the National Transportation Safety Board, the crew thought they heard a tire blowout and tried to abort the takeoff when the crash occurred.
Of the six people on the private plane (four passengers and two crew members), AM and Travis were the only two survivors, but both sustained second and third degree burns. (Travis was burned on his torso and lower body, and AM was burned on an arm and a portion of his scalp.) Sources tell TMZ that AM and Travis saved their own lives by jumping out the door of the burning plane right after it came to a halt. Despite being in critical condition, they're both expected to make full recoveries.
AM and Travis' friends, fans, and family are rallying around their loved ones. "It's a seriously sad situation," Jermaine Dupri, who visited Travis at Georgia's Joseph M. Still Burn Center, tells Us Weekly. "He's doing good... but I really hate to see my friends go through this." Meanwhile, Mandy Moore, AM's ex-GF, and Shanna Moakler, Travis' ex-wife, flew in to see the guys.
Nicole Richie, who was previously engaged to AM, is "in shock" over this awful accident. "She wishes only the best for Adam and hopes he recovers from this," a pal tells Us Weekly. "She's horribly upset about the people who died." Nicole's current BF, Joel Madden is also saddened by the sitch -- he "knows Travis and also feels terrible and hopes they recover," the source says. "This is terrible news for both of them."
Our hearts and thoughts are with you guys! Get well soon!
