Out and About

Season one of Gossip Girl had some pretty amazing storylines. And one of the most intense was the whole Erik coming out thing. We chatted with Connor Paolo about the season, and he was as informative as GG herself!

Did you know that Erik was gay before he came out?
I knew like a month and a half before it happened. The producers had a conversation with me just to make sure I was comfortable with it [and] that they wanted to put the character in that direction. They explained the situation, and I was totally along for the ride. I thought it was a really nice development, I thought they handled it really well, so I was happy to do it.

What was your favorite episode to film in season one?
The episode where I came out. I had a lot to do, it was an emotional episode. But "Dare Devil," where we went to the club -- that was a lot of fun. It was a nice shooting.

What do you think should happen to Erik in season two?
I think Erik should take a little bit more Chuck with him and turn into a little bit of a bad boy. I'm waiting for that.
What do your friends think of you being on Gossip Girl?
They think it's funny, just in terms of the way people react. They get a kick out of people recognizing me on the street. Most people are pretty cool with it.

How do most fans approach you?
Everybody has their own reaction. Someone today was just like [speaks in a commanding voice] "You're on Gossip Girl!" I was like, "Yeah, thank you!" Others, there's like these levels. It's like, "Ah. Ah! AH!" It depends how many people. If it's one person, they're usually more contained because they're shyer. Big group of girls, it can get dangerous.

Do you ever get scared by mobs of crazed fans?
Nothing could ever make me afraid. [But] 14-year-old girls are not to be trifled with, trust me.
