Malawi Don't Preach

After the hullabaloo over Madonna's adoption of a Malawian baby last fall, the whole thing might come to a screeching halt. Penstone Kilembe, director of Child Welfare Services, has been accused of accepting a ticket to England to visit Madge & company after the Malawian government denied him permission to visit Madge's family in London. As a result, the Material Mom might have to let go of adopted son, David.

Here's what happened: As part of the adoption process, Penstone was monitoring how David was settling into his new family. But Malawian social services could not afford to pay for Penstone to take two trips to Madonna's homes in the UK. "We have been unable to travel because of logistical problems," he said last week. "It requires some resources for me to travel." When Kate Kainja, the Malawian Minister of Women and Child Development got wind of the situation, she accused Penstone of accept a free flight to London Madge without asking the government for approval, and therefore, of "personalizing" the case and jeopardizing his neutrality.

Without Penstone's testimony about whether Madonna and her hubby, Guy Ritchie are fit to adopt David permanently, the final ruling may come out differently, Daily Mail explains. And if Madonna did indeed pay for Penstone's visits, she may not get a positive recommendation. "What this means is that the whole adoption process may crumble and David [will be] sent back to his village," Penstone tells Reuters.

Guess Madonna can't be so certain that she's "keeping her baby."
