The moron of the week award goes to Cameron Diaz!
The supposedly worldly star offended Peruvians on her recent trip to Machu Picchu. While exploring the city, Cam carried an olive green messenger bag featuring a red star and the saying, "Serve the People" in Chinese.
So what's the problem? Here's a little history lesson (yes, it's summer break, but hear us out): the phrase was one of Communist leader Mao Zedong's favorite political slogans, and in the 1980s and 1990s, Peruvians were attacked at the hands of a Maoist guerrilla rebels who killed almost 70,000 people. "[The slogan] alludes to a concept that did so much damage to Peru, that brought about so many victims," Peruvian human rights activist, Pablo Rojas told the Associated Press. "I don't think she should have used that bag where the followers of that ideology did so much damage."
Cameron apologized for her major fashion faux pas: "I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have inadvertently offended," she said in a statement e-mailed to the AP. "The bag was a purchase I made as a tourist in China and I did not realize the potentially hurtful nature of the slogan printed on it…I'm sorry for any people's pain and suffering and it was certainly never my intention to reopen what I now know is a painful wound in this country's history."
Hmmm, wonder how that's gonna affect Shrek 3 at the Peruvian box office.
