Breaking up is a royal pain -- especially if you were going to become a princess. Yep, it's true -- Prince William and Kate Middletonhave split up after dating for nearly five years!

According to the UK's The Sun, the couple decided to end their relationship during a March ski trip to the Swiss Alps. (One of Kate's "chums" blames too much attention from the press as the source of the break up.)

The British press is in a frenzy about the break up -- the biggest royal split since William's 'rents, Prince Charles and Princess Diana called it quits in 1992. (Think the U.S. tabloids' reaction to Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt's divorce.) But sources say the break up wasn't so heart wrenching: an unnamed source tells the Daily Mail that Kate was "cool and quite relaxed when she told everyone" about the split.
