Six Things You Should Know About KT Tunstall:
5. Don't look to her for mushy love songs! KT began writing her own songs during her mid-teens. "I was just coming out with this schmaltzy love nonsense," she says. "It was a complete vomit of puppy love." Luckily, KT's style evolved into the bluesy rock she plays now. "My songs examine and explore little specific emotions or situations or stories," she says. "They're kitchen table songs, like a conversation between me and one other person. It's almost like an alien has been sent to get emotional samples from human beings and put it all together on a record." That doesn't mean she's lost her youthful optimism though: "On the whole, I'm a positive, skippity-la-la person, but I love the dark side of music and I will always want to explore that," she says. "[Eye to the Telescope is] a positive-sounding album, but there's stuff underneath for sure."
6. You might just be hearing about KT now, but she's gotten major acclaim in the U.K. With three 2006 Brit Award nominations (including a win for Best British Female Solo Artist), a Q Award win for best track ("Black Horse And The Cherry Tree") and the distinguishing honor of being the U.K.'s biggest selling female artist of 2005, it's about time that KT's talent is acknowledged on this side of the pond.
