Should Sexting Be a Felony?
What is the proper punishment for sending around nude photos via text? Some teenagers are learning the lesson the hard way.
In Greensburg, Pennsylvania, three girls were slapped with child pornography charges after sexting their boyfriends and the guys who received the texts were charged with possession. Two teen girls in Ohio were charged with felonies for texting nude photos to their classmates. Similar cases are being reported in Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Texas, Utah and Wisconsin. If convicted, these teens will be registered sex offenders.
"Once it's on a cell phone, that cell phone can be put on the Internet where everyone in the world can get access to that juvenile picture," A Pennsylvania cop explains to Newsweek. The reasoning behind the legal charges is that these teens do not realize how dangerous and serious their actions are. A harsh punishment is being seen as the most effective way to get the message across.
