Do Sexual Lyrics Promote Sex in Teens?

Researchers at Pittsburgh University pooled 711 teens and questioned them on their music habits and sex lives. The result? Teens that listened to music with sexual lyrics were twice as likely to be having sex.

The researchers divided up the students -- one group listened to over 17.6 hours of music a week and the other under 2.7 hours a week. The ninth-graders listed their favorite artists and the researchers broke down how many of the artists' songs described "degrading sex."

Two-thirds of the polled students were virgins when they started this survey. At the conclusion of the survey, the researchers estimated that the teens exposed to sexual lyrics were twice as likely to engage in sexual activity than the teens that listened to music less frequently.

"It is tempting to say music is just 'teenage stuff,'" Lead researcher Dr. Brian A. Primack tells the BBC. "I am not saying parents should try to ban such music, that is unlikely to help. But they should be talking to their children about sex and putting these sorts of lyrics in context."
