Are Dating Sites For Teens Dangerous?
MyLOL.net is a dating website just for teenagers. Like other dating sites, its users can upload photos, profiles, and meet potential daters. But unlike its adult-counterparts the service is 100 percent free. So far, the site boasts 17,000 members worldwide.
Children's Charity, NSPCC, is concerned that this site can be dangerous and wants it shut down. Their main concern is that the site is exposing teens to pedophiles, as older men can pose as teens and chat with teenagers easily. The owner of the website, Anthony Lipari said there has already been a case where a 40-year-old man was harassing a teen.
Mr. Liparsi says they are aware of the issues and security will be improved in the next few months. "We state pretty clearly in the terms of service, specifically not to give out any personal information at all," Mr.Liparis said. "It's up to them if they want to be open."
Eleven-year-old Bethany uses the site and told Newsbeat, "If anyone's older than me I don't normally talk to them." Her mom Tammy monitors Bethany's site use and monitors the teens Bethany is chatting with. "There's going to be people who are portraying themselves as things they're not," Tammy said. "That's a risk you've got to teach them about rather than trying to avoid it completely."
