Should The Paparazzi Be Forced To Keep Their Distance From Celebs?
Britney and lawmakers -- would you ever think those two words would ever be said in the same sentence? Us neither. But Ms. Spears has inspired L.A. City Councilman Dennis Zine to introduce a motion that would establish a "personal safety zone" around people in which photographers cannot enter. "It is a major issue we have to address. We are in a celebrity town," he tells the L.A. Times. "I don't want a repeat of what happened to Princess Diana with a celebrity in Los Angeles."
The law would require new ordinances to regulate how the paparazzi do business, such as creating a "clear space" that would keep them from disturbing businesses and residences, blocking entrances to emergency facilities, or being an nuisance to people in public.
But not everyone is onboard with the proposal. "Councilman Zine is responding to frustration we all have with the paparazzi," Police Chief William Bratton tells the L.A. Times. "We already have appropriate laws within the constitutional guidelines and we intend to do that whether it is erratic driving, trespassing on private property or any action that goes beyond the constitutional rights to cover a story."
