Should Zoey 101 Get Axed?
OK, we all know about the latest Spears drama -- and it doesn't have to do with Britney for once. Yup, little sis Jamie Lynn is pregnant. But what's to come of her Nickelodeon TV show, Zoey 101? The fourth season of the show is scheduled to begin airing in February, but can the show really go on when its 16-year-old star is expecting and no longer role model material?
New York Daily News television critic, David Hinckley wrote in a column last week that Nick should cancel the final season of Zoey 101 to end "this sordid moment" with a lesson. "If Nickelodeon keeps Jamie Lynn Spears because her product sells, it runs the risk that a valuable message it has spent years crafting could shift from 'trust us' to 'whatever,'" he wrote.
For now, Nickelodeon is backing Jamie Lynn. "We respect Jamie Lynn's decision to take responsibility in this sensitive and personal situation," the network said in a statement. "We know this is a very difficult time for her and her family, and our primary concern right now is for Jamie Lynn's well being." They may even air a special on sex and love, hosted by veteran newswoman Linda Ellerbee. "I think it's important that something be done. But I think it's important that it be done in a measured way, and not just to feed the beast of news stories," Linda said. "Right now what Nick is trying to do -- and what I am trying to do -- is figure out what is the best thing to do for kids." Still, the network is keeping mum for now, saying that they haven't made any definite decisions yet.
