Should Guys Be Allowed To Run For Homecoming Queen?
Picture this: you're a senior in high school, you've been nominated for Homecoming Queen, and you're super stoked to win. (Who wouldn't be?!) But when the winner is announced, she's -- a guy?!
That's what happened at University City High School in St. Louis, Missouri. In what was a practical joke, senior Aaron Zaggy eschewed running for Homecoming King and instead chose to go for the title of Queen -- and he ended up beating out a bunch of girls to score the honor! "I'm proud to be the queen," Aaron tells Fox 2 News. Echoes District Spokesperson Daphne Dorsey: "Diversity is important. We allow students to express themselves how they fell and this is one way Aaron Zaggy wanted to express himself."
As can be expected, the girls who Aaron beat out for the crown are not too happy about their male competitor. "It was like 'what?' That's all I can say is 'what?'" Jehmela Wilson says. "I wanted to win: I'm a female, I'm a queen. He just did it to be a joke." Members of the community, too, are outraged. "I think this is deplorable. I think this is ignorance," says resident and former school board member Walter Daniels. "This is not a lesson in diversity -- this is a mockery of our school district."
