How do you get all those awesome surf shots on Beyond the Break?
We actually surf with a water camera strapped to the board -- it's wild. We're actually operating as the actor, the surfer and sort of the DP at the same time. I'm rolling film myself. I start the camera when I see a wave coming in, and I make sure I cut so we don't waste film. That's sort of a challenge too because if you wipe out, the camera's way over there, you're under water, the film's still rolling -- you don't get the best footage. But it's really awesome.
Is there any downside to filming the show in Hawaii?
You start to get a little big of island fever. It can be a bit claustrophobic at times.
