Are Energy Drinks Harmful For Teens?

Energy drinks may give you that extra jolt when you need it, but the jolt comes with a slew of other side effects. Symptoms like nausea, abnormal heart palpitation, and emergency room visits have been reported across the nation. In Florida, four middle school children went to the ER after drinking energy drink Redline.

According to The Journal of American College Health, energy drinks can be linked to "toxic jock" syndrome. The study does not suggest that energy drinks cause dangerous and risky behaviors. But it might be a sign that the consumer might be more willing to participate in risky behavior whether it's sexual or health-related.

There's a laundry list of ingredients that go in the drinks, but the main ingredient is caffeine. A latte has about 75 milligrams of caffeine, where as energy drinks can have anywhere from 100 to 428 milligrams of caffeine for the same size.
