Should GMA Have Questioned Katie Holmes About The Controversial New Tom Cruise Book?
Being married to a contentious megastar like makes you überfamous, but it also opens you up to a lot of controversy. Welcome to the life of Katie Holmes!
The latest rumor about Katie and her hubby Tom Cruise comes from a new book that's causing quite a stir. In Tom Cruise: An Unauthorized Biography, author Andrew Morton asserts that TomKat's daughter Suri was created with the sperm of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard instead of Tom's. And as luck (or very strategic planning) would have it, the book dropped this week -- just three days before Katie's new movie, Mad Money hit theatres. But when Katie made an appearance on Good Morning America, her interview with journalist Diane Sawyer stuck to very vanilla, safe questions and mentioned nothing about the book, even though Tom's fuming and threatening a $100 million lawsuit over its publication. (Similarly, Live With Regis And Kelly ignored the topic as well.) Is Katie's new bob more newsworthy than that?!
GMA executive producer Jim Murphy tells The New York Post that there was no agreement to avoid the subject and that they planned for the segment to get a little more personal. "[Diane] was looking for the right place to do that," he says. "She knew we wanted to be fair and deal with [Katie's new] movie and she wanted to talk about her life because Diane likes to produce a well-produced segment and bring something special to it when you get somebody that you don't see often on live television -- but we had a time issue." Still, he says that they wouldn't have mentioned the book directly because of criticism over the quality of its journalism. "A lot of innuendo and gossip in that book is reported as fact," he says.
