Are Proms Getting Too Outrageous?

Prom is supposed to be a night you'll never forget, but how much are you willing to pay for it? For many New York teens, it is (or rather, their loaded parents). "It's a once-in-a-lifetime thing, so people are going to go all out," Syosset High School senior, Lisa tells the New York Post. "It took me a few months to get everything together, the dress, the dinner, limo, all that stuff. Definitely [I'm spending] in the four figures."

For some teens, part of going all out for prom includes getting plastic surgery. New York plastic surgeon, Dr. Lewis Feder had five girls come in for some pre-prom primping: two girls got Botox between their eyes, and three others got $600 Restylane injections for plumper lips. "Their parents authorized me," he tells the Post.

While your prom may not been as hoity-toity as they are in Manhattan, prom spending is skyrocketing across the country. The average prom-goer spends $600 on their outfit, hair styling, accessory, dinner, and limo expenses, according to research from Conde Nast Bridal Media. Add in pre-and-post-prom parties and long weekends at the beach or in the mountains, and you've got an even pricier tab. Overall, prom spending is estimated to be up to $6.6 billion -- $2.6 billion more than it was just two years ago.
