Should Teens Need Permission to Post on MySpace?
You need a permission slip to go on school trips -- should you need one to post your profile on MySpace? Lawmakers in Connecticut recently proposed legislation that would require networking sites to verify users' ages using driver's licenses and public information records to check the age, and then obtain parental permission of users under 18. The sites would also have to legitimize parental consent by following up with parents directly when necessary.
While Connecticut is the only state with a parental consent proposal, 10 to 20 other states are toying with the idea of similar regulations, according to Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal.
"There is no such thing as a fool-proof, magic bullet system, but this one provides a much greater degree of security for children and it empowers parents to protect their children," he said.
The bill was introduced a day after a man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for setting up a sexual encounter with an 11-year-old Connecticut girl using MySpace -- one of the first federal sex cases involving the site.
